From Dax, France comes Miriam to live my life with me for 2 weeks. Yes, she even went to early morning seminary. The first few days were on the quiet side, but we soon warmed up to each other. Having 8 years of English under her belt and an English teacher for a mom, the language barrier wasn't too much of a problem. Still, there were a few amusing misunderstandings. The day after she arrived we left on a 3 day band trip across the state, so the 14 hours on a bus together was plenty of bonding time. By the end of the trip we were pretty easy friends, and reaching the level where we could now casually insult each other (a crucial step in any friendship.)
Oh right: the boys. I can't count on my fingers the number of boys that confessed to me their deep love for the girl.
Stuff we did together: well, we went to pasco, which included eating at fast food restaurants breakfast, lunch, and dinner; we went to tacoma art museum; fort nasqualli; fondue restaurant; made hours worth of wacky videos on my camera; went to seattle (ivars, ferry, aquarium, curiousity shop); went to the school talent show; made a fort and turned on the strobe light; went to all my classes at school; watched 7 or 8 episodes of Monk; made strange French pastries; hunted for easter baskets; went to a BBQ thrown for the exchange students; went to mutual/church; had intense paper airplane contests; played hide-and-go-seek with Collin; went on walks with Collin; did the big trail hike at Illihee; she taught me how to do a cartwheel (she does gymnastics/dance/some piano/clarinet). Anyway, fun time. When it was time for the French kids to leave, there was much weeping and wailing. I don't remember any gnashing of teeth.

I love your writing, Pheobe. I'm sad that I embarrassed myself so heartily with my attempt at talking French with her.
yeah, the first time you called, i could tell things were a bit awkward, then the second time it sounded like you guys had warmed up, then the last time it's like yall were best friends alreaady.
sounds fun. i think i remember why dax sounded so familiar. i think one of french missionaries i served with was from there.
in your defense annaliese, french over the phone in at least 10X than face to face.
Now you can go to France and visit her and take me with you:)
* is at least 10X harder than face to face.
annaliese: nah, i think she was impressed for americans to know any french at all. i could tell she liked it when i tried to piece together sentences. (oh and thanks about the writing. if only my speaking could come out as coherant)
